On the 12^th of July, Messieurs Shaw and MacTavish arrived at York Factory. After the escape of M^r Mackintosh they were conveyed to Norway House where all the prisoners were confined on a small rocky island in the lake, about a mile from the fort. Here M^r MacTavish, having been told that it was intended to send him to the Rock on the way to York Factory, wrote a letter to Williams reminding him of his promise he had made to send them to Canada. The next morning, the 3^d of July, Williams came over to the island, and told M^r MacTavish that he intended to send him to England, and upon being reproached with the breach of his promise, to send them all to Canada, he carelessly replied, "it may be so, but I have changed my mind." To M^r Shaw's requisition to be sent to Canada he answered that he had neither canoes nor men to spare for his conveyance, that therefore he must proceed to the Rock, where he
