"cannon, musquets and bayonets, pikes with handles five or six feet in length, and other arms", "that, seeing this military array, he suspected that their appearance there was for some extraordinary purpose; that Mr Williams and Mr Clarke came into his lodge, and told him that neither he nor his sons would be allowed to go out of it, that they forbade them to do so in the King's name, and that, if any one of them attempted to go out, he should be seized like the people of the North West Company; saying further that they had come there for the purpose of taking the people of the North West Company prisoners."

For the more effectual fulfilment of this purpose, they landed one of the pieces of canon and two swivels, placed this artillery, loaded, on a point of land, where it commanded the foot of the rapid, and made an abattis in front. The other piece of artillery remained in the barge, which was moved in the stream as a gunboat, so as also to command the navigation.
