of the Chief Mr Chaboillez not to be out done in generosity handed to him in return his bundle of merchandize untied – that is he gave him his whole purse – and both seemed equally satisfied with the transaction as with each other[.] Mr C. being now provided I remarked that Mr H. was equally deserving of attention[.] Upon this recommendation the Chief made a long speech to the Camp in favor of the White Chiefs – he expressed his obligations to them – and the high sense that all Indians ought to entertain of the White peoples goodness for benefits conferred in different shapes within a few Years – upon Indians nations[.] Then Addressing himself to me – "my son, said he, Tomorrow I shall adopt a Shayan who will be a brother to you[.] And I will present my pipe covered with plenty of Christian goods and among those goods will be two hundred guns – for which I expect as many horses from the Shayans in return[.] Then You and the white Chief can choose out from among them one for each."

Late in the evening we heard an uproar in the camp. Observing the people running in confusion towards a certain point we joined followed and discovered that the noise was occasioned by the arrival of three Assiniboines[.] These having come to the Mississouri Villages immediately after our departure thought proper to follow us to this place[.] The Shayans and that nation are at war – but the Assiniboines being friends with the Mississouri Indians they depended upon them on this occasion for protection[.] The Mississouri Indians therefore gathered round the strangers who feeling sensible of their critical situation and impending danger Kept dancing and singg the death song[.] The Shayans enraged wished to break through the ranks and it was with great difficulty their all lives were preserved[.] Some Scioux who happened to be among the Shayans took the strangers in charge for the
