The White men are curious they know a great deal much they wish to know every thing more[.] [T]hey are only three in number that go with you[.] You are more than a thousand & more they can do you no harm[.] You see their skin it is White their hearts are white like their Skin[.] [T]hey are good men and will do you no harm. Be Therefore be civil to them – give them plenty to eat let them be the first and the best served and let your women be Kind to them[.] [N]ever ask any thing from them they are generous and will pay you of themselves with more than you could ask – and much you you will be in the end pleased for your contribution[.] The White people love beaver they risk their lives in search of beaver of otter […] and say they are fond of the Beaver they never have enough of it. What use they make of ithaving it I Know not[.] But they give us good things in exchange return – they give us powder and Ball. Our forefathers were not acquainted With White people but we live much better than our forefathers did[.] Do your neighbors the Serpent nation live as we do? [N]o. [H]ad they like us white men so to furnish Arms we should not carry away so many of their scalps[.] White men are powerful they are like magic[.] I therefore once more entreat for my friends to protect them with care and indulgence. And you my Son never let the Young chief out of your sight – accompany him wherever he goes[.] Should any misfortune happen to him we can not never look at a White man […] without feeling ashamed. I am going this summer to see their great chief at his Fort. I shall assure tell him that his young men are safe and in charge of my son who I shall tell him […] that my son is a great man – and the Great chief will here after show you […] Kindness[.]
