us in order to invite some of the Mississourie Indians particularly my friend the Borgne for whom they had as a Present the skin of a white Buffaloe[.] We got home the third day[.] Our absence having been longer than it was expected, our friends were greatly concerned for our safety – especially Mr Caldwell who concluded from the apprehensions daily expressed by the Indians that we should never return[.]

After much councelling the Borgne and a few of his Young friends accompanied the Shayanns on their return[.] We began to think of home[.] [A] few days after while we were preparing for our return, I was surprised to hear my name repeated at the door of the Tent by a voice which seemed familiar to my ear[.] [E]lated I flew to the door where I found Mr Chaboillez – Mr Henry – and Mr Allen MacDonell with three servants standing before me[.] The first salutation of these Gentlemen was a reproof on account of my dress which happened to be the Indian custom of that quarter[.] This dress I found convenient[.] Let the idea of Savage be taken away
