General Notes: The Montreal Heart Institute was originally housed on two floors of the then new Hôpital Maisonneuve in 1954. There existed 42 beds, and a medical team of three cardiologists and two surgeons at the institute. The Hôpital Maisonneuve was established by the Grey Nuns who also helped realize the innovative idea of creating an institute of cardiology along with Dr. Paul David. The first human open-heart surgery performed in Canada occurred at the Montreal Heart Institute. The Montreal Heart Institute is affiliated with the Universite de Montreal and has an agreement with McGill University to train its students.
