In 1954 the Hospital had a capacity of 169 beds and 30 cribs.
Architectural Notes: In 1963, the building was structured as follows: the basement contained the store, the printing presses, the reserve of emergency beds, and the technical and housekeeping rooms. The first floor held the walk-in clinic, the urology department, the pharmacy, the intern department, the morgue, the kitchen, the laundry, and the cafeteria. The second floor held the administrative offices, as well as the library and hospital archives. The third floor contained all the religious departments and the chapel. The fourth floor, painted blue, was designated for male patients and nurses, while the fifth floor, painted pink, was designated for women patients and nurses, and also contained the pediatric department. The sixth floor was comprised of the operating rooms, obstetrics and the nursery. A number of changes were made to the structure of the departments and their locations in the building in the early 1970's. An example is the moving of the emergency clinic to the first floor in 1973, the moving of the radiology department to the second floor, and the moving of the autopsy department to modernized rooms in the basement. For more information on theses changes, (consult page 64 of the pamphlet).
Floors: There were 6 floors.
Contractor: The contractor was Ulric Boileau, with J.C. Brunet in charge of plumbing and M.F. McCarragher in charge of electricity.
Material: The hospital was made of reinforced concrete covered with stone and brick.
Construction Notes: The building's footprint originally spanned 220 feet by 75 feet.
General Notes: The administration revealed plans to build a new structure in September of 1938. The move into the new structure was completed by June 26, 1940 (CH Lachine, p.28). The nursing school closed in 1960 due to reduced enrollment caused by a lack of rooms in which to house the nursing students ~(CH Lachine, p.39). In 1976, the nursery and maternity ward were closed, and were replaced by a long-term care unit. Also, the pediatric department was moved and reduced in size.~(CH Lachine, p.64)
