Description: The ruins of Fort Senneville, located on Boisbriant, the Senneville estate of Sir Edward Seaborne Clouston, General Manager of the Bank of Montreal. The fort was initially constructed in 1671 during the French colonial regime to assist in the defence of the western approaches to Montreal and the trade route to the settlement via both the Ottawa and St. Lawrence Rivers. Burned by Iroquois in 1691, it was rebuilt in 1702-03. The fort was eventually destroyed by American revolutionary troops under the command of Benedict Arnold in 1776 as they retreated south following the Battle of the Cedars. As is evidenced by numerous photographs in the collection, Gwendolen Marjorie Howard visited the Cloustons at Boisbriant several times during the first years of the twentieth century. She was friends with both of Edward Clouston's daughters, Osla and Marjory.
