Located at the eastern end of Lake Ontario where the Saint Lawrence River begins, Kingston, Ontario was home to Gwendolen Marjorie Howard's friends, the Drury family. The head of the family, Major-General Charles W. Drury, was the brother of the mother of Marjorie's close friend Phyllis Porteous. He was commander of the Permanent Force artillery at Kingston's Fort Henry until being given command over the Halifax military complex following the Boer War (1899-1902). It appears, however, that his family remained in Kingston during the first decade of the twentieth century. During those years Marjorie visited the family on several occasions. Avid sailors, family members are shown in many of the collection's photographs either on sailing expeditions near Kingston, or at the city's yacht club. As a military family, many of the collection's Kingston photographs also show Marjorie and members of the Drury family at the Royal Military College or at fort Henry.
