Although many of the photographs in the Futcher Collection were not taken in the city, Montreal was central to Gwendolen Marjorie Howard’s life. Born in the city in 1882, Marjorie lived there until 1894 when she moved to Dresden for three years to attend school. Transferring in 1897 to Highfield, a boarding school for young ladies located outside of London for the remainder of her schooling, she returned to Montreal in 1899. From then until her marriage in 1909, Marjorie lived in Montreal, only leaving the Howard family home to vacation and visit friends at the Lake of Two Mountains, Kingston, Île d'Orléans, Métis-sur-Mer, Murray Bay, Baltimore, Bermuda, and Britain.
