Historical publication societies have played an important role in the preparation of scholarly editions of important early texts and collections of documents that relate to their specific mission. The Prince Society of Boston, Massachusetts published fundamental source materials on early American history, especially of New England. Organized in 1858 and named for Thomas Prince (1687-1758), the Society issued 36 volumes between 1865 and 1920. The Society's authoritative translation into English of Champlain’s Voyages provides annotations, additional supporting material and indices. The Champlain Society is Canada's premier historical publication society and aims to contribute to the intellectual, scientific and cultural development of country. The Society was founded in 1905 by Sir Edmund Walker and the founding members voted to name their society after Champlain, in honour of the “first settler and founder of the Country.” Much larger in scope than any other project dealing with Champlain, the Society's edition includes all of Champlain’s voyages from 1599 through 1632 with appropriate illustrations and maps in facsimile. The original French texts and a new English translation appear on the same page. The publication of this edition was undertaken to coincide with the Quebec Tercentenary in 1908. The project began in 1905, the first volume was published in 1922 and the last in 1936."
