The Great Soviet Encyclopedia lists 130 languages of the indigenous peoples represented in the former USSR. Seventy of these are literary languages, fifty of which were formed in this century. Following the October Revolution, some of these languages changed their indigenous characters into Cyrillic or Roman script, others acquired a written form for the first time. Most of these changes are reflected in the great variety of languages represented in the McGill collection of Soviet children's books.
