Description |
|
The study of the German 16th-century painter Hans Leonhard Schaeufelein (d. 1540?) was originally issued, without illustrations, as the author's inaugural dissertation at the University of Leipzig. Thieme's name continues to be well known today for the important comprehensive dictionary of artists, known as Thieme-Becker, which he began to compile with Felix Becker (37 volumes, published 1907-1950). Karl Koetschau made numerous notes and annotations in the margins, thus leaving us a record of his handwriting and a source for future study of his scholarly interests and opinions on northern Renaissance art.
