Description |
|
This book on Bartholomeus Spranger (1546-1611) a Flemish Mannerist painter at the court of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, contains Koetschau's bookplate by E. Liebermann and a binder's stamp: W. Collin, Hofbuchbinder, Berlin. Since 1909 was the year Koetschau left his post as museum director in Weimer to take up another in Berlin, he might have acquired this book in Berlin. The binding is unusual, with a marbled cover in burgundy, taupe and beige in a large design. The binder's title in gilt misspells the author's name on the cover: Dietz (sic), Springer. A ms. inscription reads: Dr. Max Stern, I 444.
