| According to the inscription, this amply illustrated book of reminiscences of his life and travels by the German painter Theodor Rocholl was given as a gift to Max Stern by "Onkel Gustav". Rocholl had been a painter of battlefields in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870-71, the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900 and World War II in 1914-18. He later specialized in idyllic landscapes in Hesse, Germany, usually featuring horses.
