Through the present exhibition, we intend to honour Dr. Sterns memory and his legacy. At the same time, we want to express our deep appreciation to all those who took part in the chain of events that made this important gift and the new research attendant upon it possible: Chancellor Richard Pound, Principal Emeritus Bernard Shapiro, and the Director of Development Mrs. Susan Reid, McGill University provided the initial funding for the cataloguing of the Stern Collection. Mrs. Frances Groen, The Trenholme Director of Libraries, McGill University, and Mr. William Curran, Director of Concordia University Libraries offered additional financial support. Mr. Bram Freedman, Dr. Clarence Epstein and Dr. Loren Lerner from Concordia University as well as M. Michel Moreau and Mr. Michael Barnwell from the Dominion Gallery, all contributed to the planning stages of the Stern Library project. The staff of the Rare Books and Special Collections Division of McGill University Libraries, and particularly Donald Hogan and Gary Tynski helped with the organization of the exhibition Highlights from the Stern Collection, held at McGill in the autumn of 2003. Under the leadership of David McKnight, the staff of the Digital Collections Program - Eli Brown, Elizabeth Thomson, Vijitha Iyadurai, Steven Gee, and Andrew Ensslen - helped create the web site Max Stern Book Collection + Virtual Exhibition. We are most grateful to Nevenka Koscevic, Special Project Librarian, who has catalogued and continues to catalogue the Stern collection and who, together with Dr. Almuth Seebohm and Marianne Bär, assisted in the development of the present exhibition. Additional thanks are due to our colleagues in the library of the National Gallery of Canada - particularly Philip Dombowsky and Cyndie Campbell - whose recent exhibition from the archives of Dr. Max Stern set example and provided us with much useful information.
