The rapid, large-scale industrialization of the
Soviet state was reflected in the number of children's books intended
to instill pride in the many achievements in this area. At the same
time, children were encouraged to learn about different trades, professions
and skills that had contributed to the strengthening of the Soviet industrial
and economic base. One of the most iconic of the large-scale industrial
projects of the 1920s and 30s was the completion, in 1932, of the Dnieprostroi
dam in the Ukraine. The creation of the ambitious, 167 ft high dam,
which supported the largest single hydro-electric plant in Europe was
a source of immense pride to the Soviet state and to the thousands of
workers who had helped to regulate the 1,400 miles-long river Dnieper
and it inspired dozens of publications for adults and for children.
Marshak's Voina s Dneprom (War with the Dniepr river, 1933) is perhaps
the best known of a plethora of the Dnieprostroi-inspired books, many
written for children.
