In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, concerns were raised over the reading material considered suitable for women. While some books were seen as edifying, others were feared to threaten young women’s ostensibly impressionable minds. Notwithstanding the stereotypical view of women as simply consumers of books, these same years saw an increasing number of women becoming published authors. Letter-writing also became a constituent part of female subjectivity.
