Letter from Edward Archibald to Wilder Penfield, January 20, 1928.
Date:
1928-01-20
Description:
This is a twelve page, handwritten letter from Edward Archibald to Wilder Penfield. In the letter Dr. Archibald begins by discussing possible alternatives to Dr. William Vernon Cone as a research assistant, should he choose a different position over an appointment at McGill University and the Royal Victoria Hospital. Dr. Archibald then discusses the logistics surrounding finding a suitable alternative to Dr. Cone and suggests that, if Dr. Penfield applied for an earlier-discussed research trip grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, the research trip would give McGill and the hospital more time to find an acceptable replacement. Alternatively, Archibald suggests trying to tempt Dr. Cone to come to Montreal by increasing his proposed yearly salary by $1000. He goes on to discuss the equipment and space allocation required and requested by Dr. Penfield, as well as the responses of various individuals to those requests. Dr. Archibald also discusses Dr. Penfield’s prospects of acquiring public and lucrative private patients at both the Royal Victoria and at the Montreal General Hospital. Finally, he emphasizes that he is very keen to have Dr. Penfield come to Montreal, to fulfill all of the promises he had made to the young neurosurgeon, and to ensure that Montreal’s patients receive the best possible care. The letter is dated January 20, 1928.
