Letter from Wilder Penfield to Frank Cyril James, September 5, 1945.
Date:
1945-09-05
Description:
This is a typewritten letter from Dr. Wilder Penfield to Dr. Frank Cyril James, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University. Dr. Penfield indicates that he has inclosed a copy of correspondence between himself and Lieutenant Colonel William Leggat, President of the Quebec Provincial Division of the Canadian Red Cross Society. As Dr. Penfield explains, the correspondence shows how, through the efforts of Miss Eileen Flanagan, the Montreal Neurological Institute’s (MNI) Nursing Supervisor, the MNI had received a grant of $1400, as well as furniture, medical equipment, and even radios for patients from the Canadian Red Cross Society. These donations were to be put towards the outfitting of the MNI’s new Military Annex. In particular the donated funds and equipment meant that the MNI would not need to by such items, and that the money, which had been taken from the British War Relief Fund to pay for those items, could be returned to the fund, and that the British War Relief Fund could be used to pay for “essential extras” that Dr. Penfield foresees the MNI needing to buy in the near future. The letter is dated September 5, 1945.
