Selected to emphasize the lack of freedom of movement associated with slavery is a broadside dated at St. Louis, August 23, 1852, advertising rewards from slave owners for the return of their runaway slaves: all men, identified by their first name, age, physical build and condition. All, it might be hoped, made it to the "Underground Railway".
