As is recorded by the collection's albums, the Sutherland family, headed by Dr. William Dunbar Sutherland, summered in Métis-sur-Mer over several years. Their eldest daughter, Alice (b. 1882), was a close friend to Gwendolen Marjorie Howard and appears in many of the collection's photographs taken at Métis-sur-Mer, Île d'Orléans, areas west of Montreal, and at Kingston. Her brother Lutha and sister Margaret also appear in a small number of images taken at Métis-sur-Mer.

Alice eventually married Hugh Yelverton Russel (1871 - 1924), the older brother of Dr Colin Kerr Russel (1877 - 1956) a McGill medical graduate, who studied neurology and psychiatry at Johns Hopkins at the encouragement of Sir William Osler. Dr Russel appears in several photographs in the collection which were taken at the Osler family's Oxford home during May and June of 1905. Dr Russel was in England that year completing an internship at the National Hospital for the Relief and Cure of the Paralysed and Epileptic, Queen Square, London.
