The Fishstein Collection is rich in rare, often ephemeral material stemming from pre-revolutionary Russia and the Soviet Union between the World Wars. The great literary figures, including the major poets, were severely harassed during the regime of Stalin. Yiddish literature suffered a devastating blow in 1952, when many Yiddish writers and other cultural figures were executed.

Books and booklets published in the Soviet Union between 1919 and 1948 are among the rarest in modern Yiddish literature. Press runs were small, few copies found their way to the West, and fewer have survived. The Fishstein Collection has many such titles, many of them in superb condition.
