Browse/Journal Layout | Search Functions | Listings Functions

The following help features outline the layout of the journal and some anomalies regardings its appearance on the website, and using the Browse, Search, and Listings functions. Various changes occured over the course of the journal's publication resulting in changes to page naming and ordering, as well as volume numbering. This is outlined below under the Browse Help Section. The first monthly issue of the Canadian Architect and Builder was published in 1888 and the last issue appeared in April 1908.

CAB Help: Using the Browse feature

Appearance of Volume 1:

On the website, the first volume appears differently than the volumes which follow. The first volume, due to its larger format, was scanned in colour with a large-format scanner. Converting it to a black and white file format caused the images to be of a low quality and it was decided that the first volume be converted to greyscale.

Editions:

In January, 1890, the journal began to appear in two editions: a Regular Edition and an Architects’ Edition. The Architects’ Edition had more illustrations or plates. As well, some written content differed from the Regular Edition and the Architect’s Edition. However, this only included about 2 to 3 pages per issue; in the Regular Edition these pages usually included the sections titled "Intercommunication" and "Questions and Answers" which replaced various elements that appeared in the Architects’ Edition. For this project most volumes with the exception of volumes 17 and 20 are comprised of pages from the Regular Edition.

Page Numbering:

The page numbering which appears in the drop-down list at the top of the browse toolbar, is consistent with the page ordering of each issue. The way issues were ordered and numbered evolved as the journal evolved and this is reflected in the page numbering in the drop down list. Issues within each volume (except for volumes 1, 21, and 22) were paged consecutively. For example, each issue in Volume 1 restarted page numbers at 1, while in later volumes, page numbers for each issue continued from the last page of the issue previous. These anomalies might, at first glance, make it seem that the page numbering is out of order or that pages seem to be missing. For example, Volume 4, Issue 12 begins at page 101 since Volume 4, Issue 11 ended with page 100. In early editions, plates were not given page numbers. In later issues plates were given page numbers and, in order to keep the numbering scheme consistent, we have provided both page number and plate number. In addition, the order and display of pages was determined by what remained in various collections around the country. Many issues do not have covers or title pages or had pages missing. When these could be located, they were scanned and provided on the website. In all remaining instances, these pages remain missing from the CAB website.

When browsing CAB, page numbers are listed in the drop-down menu at the top of the page. At times, inconsistencies may appear between this text and the page number on the image. In such instances, we found that the page number on the original printed page was wrong or not consistent (i.e. page 65 appears twice, on both pages 65 and 66). When this occurs, we have corrected the display text in the drop-down menu list but left the incorrect page number in the scanned image.

Page numbering in the drop-down menu of the Browse section of CAB follow these general guidelines:

Volume Numbering:

The volumes of the journal are numbered annually up to Volume 20, Issue 10 (October, 1907). Therefore, Volume 1 corresponds to the year 1881, Volume 2 to 1889 and so on. The issue number corresponds to the month of publication; Issue 1 was published for January and so on. However, after a change in ownership in 1907, Volume and issue numbering became inconsistent. November, 1907 was designated Volume 21, Issue 1 when it should have been designated Volume 20, Issue 11. Alas, November and December, 1907 appear as Volume 21 and January to April, 1908 appear as Volume 22. Consequently, Canadian Architect and Builder ceased publication with Volume 22, Issue 4 (April, 1908).
